Subglacial freshwater discharge affects fjord circulation, material transport, and biological productivity. To better understand the influence of subglacial discharge on properties of vertical water mass profiles of Bowdoin Fjord in northwestern Greenland, observations and numerical experiments were conducted. The vertical distributions of turbid freshwater outflow near the surface and at the subsurface were likely due to the amount of subglacial discharge and fjord stratification, respectively.

In conflict with conventional theory, recent analysis of data from a high-resolution global ocean model showed that the North Equatorial Counter Current was responsible for the unusually warm water which triggered the strong El Niños of 1982–83 and 1997–98. In this paper some of the key physics deduced from the model results are tested against satellite data from the 1997–98 event. The results show that the model closely followed reality during the period, further supporting the new mechanisms.

Our main aim is to study the feasibility of reconstructing oceanic currents by extending the data obtained from coastal multiplatform observatories to nearby areas in 3D in the SE Bay of Biscay. To that end, two different data-reconstruction methods with different approaches were tested, providing satisfactory results. This work is a first step towards the real applicability of these methods in this study area, and it shows the capabilities of the methods for a wide range of applications.

Seagrasses, as plants, need light for photosynthesis and production. This study measured the changes in productivity and light in a back-barrier estuary and connected those changes with the type of seabed within the estuary. We found that the locations with seagrass on the seabed had more light getting through the water and higher productivity because of the way seagrass keeps sediment on the seabed during wave events. When sediment stays on the bed, it cannot reduce the light in the water.

This paper focuses on internal tides in the marginal Solomon Sea where LLWBCs transit. The objective is to characterize such internal tides and to give some insights into their impacts on water mass transformation in this area of interest for the global circulation. Results are discussed for two contrasted ENSO conditions with different mesoscale activity and stratification. Such study is motivated by the next altimetric SWOT mission that will be able to observe such phenomena.

The dynamics of the European northwest shelf are analysed using both classical Eulerian and Lagrangian data from simulated particles. Focussing on the latter, a quantity named normalised cumulative particle density measures particle accumulation. Yearly averages reveal no surface accumulation areas in the deep ocean and elongated patterns on the shelf mainly along fronts. Sensitivity experiments show the influence of tides and wind, unveiling important vertical dynamics in coastal areas.

In order to provide an aid for the interpretation of observations of the formation, structure, and dynamics of submesoscale patterns, a numerical model is applied in a double-offline-nested setup to a sub-area of the Baltic Sea. A model with 500 m horizontal resolution is nested into an existing operational model in order to create a realistic mesoscale environment. Turbulent patterns with horizontal scales < 1 km are resolved by a second nest with 100 m resolution.

We analyzed 14-month-long observations from moored instruments to describe the average features and the variability of the Norwegian Atlantic Slope Current at the Lofoten Escarpment (13°E, 69°N). The slope current varies strongly with depth and in time. Pulses of strong current occur, lasting for 1 to 2 weeks, and extend as deep as 600 m. The average volume transport is 2 x 10⁶ m³ s^-1.

Witness King Tides (WKT) is a citizen-science project collecting photos of the shoreline at the time of highest predicted tide each year, with the aim of indicating the flooding that may occur routinely with sea-level rise. However, effects such as storm surges may affect the results, leading to significantly lower tides than expected. Tidal observations from the GESLA-2 global database are analysed to indicate regions of the world where WKT should perform well and others where it would not.

Observations in the Nordic Seas have shown a general warming and an increase in sea surface height over the last few decades. However, our results reveal that the sea surface heights and heat content in the decade following the mid-2000s have not risen much or even stagnated. This is most prominent in the eastern Nordic Seas, where waters of Atlantic origin dominate. We conclude that this stagnation is possibly a consequence of decreased heat transport from the subpolar North Atlantic.

Mercury is a metal of environmental concern due to its toxic nature and its high potential for biomagnification. The role of oceans in the global mercury cycle is poorly understood. Investigation of biogenic sediments revealed that biological production and related scavenging of water-phase mercury by rapidly sinking algae or algae-derived organic matter after intense algae blooms controlled preindustrial mercury accumulation in Adélie Basin, East Antarctica.

This work presents high-resolution simulations of a coupled regional model in the Mediterranean basin. The approach allows us to assess the role of ocean feedbacks in the downscaled climate. Our results show good skills in simulating present climate; the model's robustness introduces improvements in reproducing physical processes at local scales. Our climate projections reveal that by the end of the 21st century the Mediterranean Sea will be warmer and saltier although not in a homogeneous way.
